Description
Esther begins with a banquet that lasts half a year and ends with neighbors carrying plates of food to one another’s doors. In between: an orphan girl raised by her cousin, a jar of myrrh, a man who will not bow, a lot cast for a day of ruin, three days of fasting, a golden scepter held out, a king who cannot sleep, and a book of records opened to exactly the right page.
This book walks through it in thirty-two short poems, in four parts. Each poem sits beside a picture and under a single line of Scripture. The name of God is never written in the book of Esther, and the poems try to notice where his hand is hidden anyway. The pictures stay with the things the story touches—a signet ring, a sleepless lamp, a table set for three—and leave the faces to your imagination.
