preach to yourself (Psalm 42:1-5)
“Why are you in despair, my soul?” a deer at the dry creek bed, nosing the stones for water. that’s my soul, the psalmist says. thirsty for God. and then he talks to himself: why so downcast, soul? hope in God. I will praise him again. sometimes you have to preach to the only congregation that’s listening: yourself.
