Ecclesiastes begins with a single word said twice over, vanity, a breath, and then looks hard at everything a person might chase: gardens and pools, silver and gold, wisdom itself. In between: the wind going around, rivers running into a sea that is never full, a time to weep and a time to dance, a threefold cord, bread cast on the waters, an almond tree in blossom, and a silver cord and a golden bowl.

This book walks through it in thirty-six short poems, in four parts. Each poem sits beside a picture and under a single line of Scripture. The pictures stay with the things the Preacher noticed—a lamp just blown out, a heap of field stones, a loaf and a cup—and leave the faces to your imagination.
