Description

Joshua begins with a man told three times to be strong, standing where Moses used to stand. Then come a scarlet line tied in a window, priests stepping into a river in flood, twelve stones carried up from the riverbed, the last morning of manna, seven trumpets of rams’ horns, an old man asking for the hard hill country, and a people told to choose today whom they will serve. Judges begins with a generation that forgot, and goes round and round: a woman judging under a palm tree, a farmer threshing wheat in a winepress, a fleece wet with dew, torches hidden in clay jars, a strong man whose hair began to grow again, and a last prayer between two pillars.

This book walks through it in forty short poems, in five parts: twenty from Joshua and twenty from Judges. Each poem sits beside a picture and under a single line of Scripture. The pictures stay with the things the stories touch—a wet stone on a riverbank, a jug of milk, a broken jar with a flame inside—and leave the faces to your imagination. The battles stay offstage, and the darkest chapters at the end of Judges are left for the reader to meet in the Bible itself.
