In between: stones cut in silence at the quarry, a cloud of glory filling the temple, a cloak torn in twelve pieces, ravens at a brook, a widow’s last handful of flour, fire on Carmel, a voice so quiet a prophet covered his face to hear it, a mantle dropped across a plowman’s shoulders, a pot of oil that outlasted the jars, a river that made a proud captain clean, hills full of horses of fire, and a forgotten book found in the dust of the temple.

This book walks through it in forty short poems, in five parts: Solomon and the temple, the kingdom torn in two, Elijah, Elisha, and the last kings to the fall of Jerusalem. Each poem sits beside a picture and under a single line of Scripture. The pictures stay with the things the story touches—a jar of flour, a plowman’s yoke, an ax head on the water—and leave the faces to your imagination.
