Act 1, Scene 1: “Kisses of His Mouth”

Setting

The stage opens in near-darkness. A single lamp (oil flame) glows center stage, evoking the Desert Fathers’ cave cell. The backdrop is a faint desert horizon blending into Jerusalem’s vineyards. A slow Gregorian-like drone (bass voices in open fifths) begins. Then, a heartbeat drum enters.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, operatic harmony over beat]

Ooooooh—

Love divine, flame of fire,

Draw us deeper, draw us higher.

Breath of heaven, Spirit’s wine,

Mysteries of love divine.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, rap flow with melody]

Let him kiss me, kisses of his mouth,

Your love’s the wine I can’t live without.

Fragrance spills, holy oil poured,

Draw me in, my soul restored.

[Chorus – Soprano and Tenor Voices, modern opera duet]

Your name is a flowing oil—

No wonder the nations adore You.

Take me with You, into Your heart,

Lead me out, let the journey start!

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, rhythmic rap]

Don’t stare at me, the sun made me dark,

The fields burned me but couldn’t steal the spark.

My brothers made me guard their vines,

But I lost the garden that should be mine.

Tell me, my love, where do You rest?

Where do You lay, where my soul is blessed?

[Bridge – Tenor Voice, half-rap half-sung]

Follow the tracks, follow the way,

Where the shepherd rests today.

Sacred fire, holy flame,

I call you beloved, I call your name.

[Verse 3 – Tenor Voice, rap with operatic phrases]

My radiant one, I see your flame,

Though the desert tried, you remain the same.

To Me you’re a lily among the thorns,

Fragrant with grace where My love is born.

[Finale – Soprano and Tenor Voices, overlapping counterpoint]

Soprano Voice (rap): Our bed is green, beams are strong,

Our house is cedar, love is the song!

Tenor Voice (sung rap): You are a rose, My delight, My own,

My secret place, My holy throne.

Both Voices (operatic harmony):

Ooooooh—

Love awakens, Spirit flame,

Burning holy, untamed, untamed!

[Outro – Both Voices, fading harmony]

Ooooooh…

Act 1, Scene 2: “Chambers of the King”

Setting

The stage glows brighter than Scene 1. Instead of desert silence, strings and light percussion fill the air like heartbeat and breath. A royal chamber motif appears on the backdrop — curtains, gold tones — but with desert imagery still woven in (representing both the inner cell of the monk and the palace of the King).

ACT I Scene 2

[Intro – Soprano Voice, operatic with beat]

Draw me into Your heart, King of my soul,

Take me higher, where the mysteries unfold.

Your chamber calls me, holy flame,

Where love and Spirit breathe the Name.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic sung-rap]

You are lovely, My dearest one,

Eyes like doves when the day is done.

Your cheeks shine bright with a warrior’s glow,

Chains of gold where My rivers flow.

To Me you’re a treasure, more than the wine,

Burn with Me, Beloved — the fire divine.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, modern opera duet]

Take me to Your chambers, let the fire start,

Seal me with Your Spirit, brand my heart.

Love is the wine, love is the flame,

Love is the whisper that calls my name.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, prayerful rap flow]

King, I am weak but You lift me higher,

A desert flame, purified by fire.

I wandered in shadows, but now I see,

Your glory revealed in intimacy.

The monks in silence called it true,

The soul is the bride, and the bride is You.

[Bridge – Tenor Voice, operatic, mystical]

Arise, O beauty, arise, O dove,

Winter is gone, the time of love.

Flowers appear on the earth again,

The season of singing is here to reign.

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor Counterpoint]

Soprano (rap): Draw me, take me, I will run,

Your fragrance brighter than the sun!

Tenor (sung): You are My secret, My holy flame,

In My chambers, you bear My Name.

Both Voices (opera harmony):

Ooooooh—

Love divine, consuming fire,

Lift us higher, lift us higher!

Perfect. Since Scene 1 was the longing (“Let him kiss me”) and Scene 2 was the chamber of intimacy (“Draw me into your heart”), Scene 3 should naturally flow into the awakening of springtime love — imagery straight from Song of Songs 2:10–13 in the Passion Translation:

“Arise, my dearest, hurry, my darling. Come away with me! I have come as you have asked to draw you to my heart and lead you out. For now is the time, my beautiful one… The season has changed, the bondage of your barren winter has ended, and the season of hiding is over and gone.”

Mystics (like St. John of the Cross and Desert Fathers) interpret this as the soul awakening into divine union after the winter of purification.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 3: “Arise, My Love”

Setting

The backdrop shifts from desert and chamber to a blossoming garden — almond blossoms and vines projected on the scrim, green lighting with soft gold tones. The beat is brighter and more dance-like than before, with strings fluttering like bird calls.

[Intro – Tenor Voice, lyrical rap with warmth]

Arise, my love, my beautiful one,

The winter is gone, a new day’s begun.

The rains are over, the flowers appear,

The song of the dove is drawing near.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, flowing rap-chant]

I hear You calling, deep within,

A fire ignites where silence had been.

The barren season has lost its hold,

Now blossoms burst, the story told.

I will run, I will not delay,

Take me, Beloved, show me the way.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic duet]

Come away, come away with Me,

Rise up, my love, and you’ll be free.

Season of singing, time has come,

Love is the flame, we are one.

[Verse 2 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic sung-rap]

See the fig tree, the vines in bloom,

The fragrance lifts from the sacred room.

Your voice is sweet, your face is fair,

My dove in the cleft — I find you there.

O secret soul, O hidden bride,

In the rock of My mercy, come and hide.

[Bridge – Both Voices, counterpoint layering]

Soprano: You awaken me, the night is done,

Tenor: You arise in me, eternal sun.

Soprano: No more shadows, no more chains,

Tenor: Love eternal forever reigns.

[Finale – Both Voices, soaring opera harmony]

Ooooooh—

Springtime glory, rivers sing,

Bride and Bridegroom, praise the King.

Love eternal, holy flame,

Seal forever the sacred Name!

Act 1, Scene 4: “Little Foxes”

Setting

Lighting shifts darker: vineyard backdrop with shadows. Quick flashes of sly fox silhouettes projected across the scrim. Drums become sharper, urgent, with edgy strings (staccato).

[Intro – Tenor Voice, half-rap half-sung]

Catch the foxes, the little thieves,

Stealing the fruit, hiding under leaves.

The vineyard’s budding, the harvest near,

Guard your soul, keep the vision clear.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, rap with urgency]

Foxes of anger, foxes of pride,

Creep in the night, nowhere to hide.

Foxes of lust, foxes of greed,

Gnaw at the roots, choking the seed.

I stand alert, I lift my cry,

Holy fire, don’t pass me by.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic warning duet]

Catch the foxes, don’t let them stay,

Guard the vineyard, drive them away.

Seal the garden, keep it pure,

Love eternal must endure.

[Verse 2 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic rap]

The Fathers warned in the desert caves,

“Guard your mind, let your prayer be brave.”

Thoughts like shadows creep inside,

Only the flame of Christ can guide.

Foxes of envy, foxes of lies,

Slay them now before they rise.

[Bridge – Both Voices, counterpoint layering]

Soprano: In the silence, temptations come,

Tenor: In the stillness, I overcome.

Soprano: Every thought must bow to Him,

Tenor: Every shadow burns within.

[Finale – Both Voices, dramatic operatic harmony]

Ooooooh—

Foxes flee, the vineyard stands,

Kept in the King’s eternal hands.

Love is stronger, holy flame,

Guarded forever by His Name!

Mystically, this is the soul’s “dark night” (St. John of the Cross) — searching for Christ’s presence in prayer, wrestling with absence, still clinging to desire.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 5: “Searching in the Night”

Setting

The stage darkens to a cool blue wash. Shadows of vines and city streets are projected faintly. The beat slows down, heavy and heartbeat-like. Soprano enters alone, spotlight on her, as if wandering.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, plaintive operatic phrase]

Night after night, I toss, I turn,

Where is the flame my soul does yearn?

I rise, I roam, I search the street,

Until my love, my King, I meet.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, whispered rap with intensity]

I looked for You in the midnight hour,

But silence fell, no sign, no power.

I ran through alleys, I searched the square,

Every shadow—was He there?

My soul won’t rest, my eyes can’t close,

Until I find the One I chose.

[Chorus – Tenor + Soprano Voices, operatic tension duet]

Where is the Shepherd, where does He hide?

I must be near Him, I won’t be denied.

Even in silence, I’ll seek His face,

Even in darkness, I’ll find His grace.

[Verse 2 – Tenor Voice, rap like a guiding voice]

Seek Me, daughter, in the night,

Even in shadows, I am the Light.

Through the city, though unseen,

I move within, I reign supreme.

Don’t lose heart, don’t turn away,

The fire will rise with the coming day.

[Bridge – Counterpoint layering]

Soprano: I’m searching, searching, all alone,

Tenor: I’m near you, near you, though unknown.

Soprano: I’ll cling until I find the flame,

Tenor: My love is constant, always the same.

[Finale – Both Voices, swelling operatic harmony]

Ooooooh—

I found the One my soul loves best,

I hold Him close, I will not rest.

Through every shadow, through every night,

The Bridegroom shines, the endless Light!

Mystically, the monks and Christian mystics saw this as the soul’s covenantal union with Christ — the wedding feast of heaven foreshadowed.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 6: “The Wedding Procession”

Setting

Lights burst bright gold. Stage transforms into a royal scene: a slow-moving bridal procession, carried in grandeur. Smoke/fog rises to simulate the “pillar of cloud.” Dancers with banners and palm branches flank the stage. The beat is regal, almost march-like, but with hip-hop undercurrent.

[Intro – Chorus, operatic with triumphant beat]

Who is this one, ascending high,

Out of the desert, into the sky?

Pillar of glory, cloud of flame,

The Bride and the King are one in Name.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic sung-rap]

Behold the King in His chariot bright,

Sixty warriors guard the night.

All of them armed, all of them true,

Marching in power, protecting you.

Silver and gold, the carriage made,

A throne of love where the vows are laid.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic duet]

Procession holy, marriage divine,

Bride and the Bridegroom, your heart is mine.

Glory descends, the covenant sealed,

Union eternal is now revealed.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, joyful rap-chant]

I see the King, my radiant Sun,

The journey’s ended, the two are one.

No foxes now, no shadows near,

Only His voice, the song I hear.

Love’s embrace, His banner flies,

He crowns my soul before all eyes.

[Bridge – Chorus, chant-like layering]

Lift the veil, the feast begins,

Joy erupts, the Bride now wins.

Oooooh—see the flame,

He calls His bride by holy Name.

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring operatic harmony]

Come away, O Bride, arise,

Shining glory fills the skies!

Wedding song, eternal flame,

Heaven and earth rejoice His Name!

The mystics interpret this as the Eucharistic feast of divine love — Christ inviting the soul to “eat and drink of Me”.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Banquet imagery = Eucharist, union of soul and Christ.
  • Honey, milk, wine = sweetness of divine presence.
  • Banner of love = seal of covenant joy.
  • Feast of the Lamb = Revelation imagery foreshadowing final union.
  • Flawless bride = mystic theology of divine righteousness clothing the soul.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 7: “The Banquet of Love”

Setting

The stage transforms into a feast table. Grapes, wine, and bread imagery projected on scrims. Dancers swirl in celebration. Lighting is warm amber and crimson — the tone of abundance and joy. The beat is groovy, hip-hop celebratory, but layered with sweeping opera harmonies.

[Intro – Chorus, joyful operatic harmony over hip-hop beat]

Come, O lovers, feast your fill,

Drink of the wine, receive His will.

Love’s abundance, joy divine,

The Bride and the Bridegroom drink the wine.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic sung-rap]

You’ve stolen My heart with a single glance,

Dove of My soul, My holy dance.

Your eyes like rivers, your voice so sweet,

Every word you speak is bread I eat.

Honey and milk are under your tongue,

A garden enclosed, where love is young.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring opera duet]

Eat, O friends, and drink of love,

Taste the wine that flows above.

Feast with fire, heaven’s bread,

The banquet of the Lamb is spread.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, melodic rap-chant]

You call me flawless, You crown my head,

A banquet table, the feast is spread.

Your banner of love forever stays,

I rise in joy, I lift my praise.

Every desire is filled tonight,

The King has brought me into His light.

[Bridge – Chorus, layered harmonies swelling]

Ooooooh—come, rejoice, the wine is poured,

Ooooooh—celebrate the risen Lord!

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor + Chorus, operatic explosion]

Drink deep, beloved, taste and see,

This holy love is victory.

Bride and Bridegroom, flame divine,

The wedding feast is yours and mine!

The Passion Translation (Song of Songs 4:8–16) is perfect here:

“You’ve captured my heart, my treasure, my bride… Your inward life is now sprouting, bringing forth fruit. What a man’s delight you are, my darling companion! … Awake, O north wind, awake, O south wind—breathe on my garden with your Spirit wind. Stir up the sweet spice of your life within me.”

Mystically, this is the soul becoming a fragrant garden through union with Christ. The Desert Fathers often spoke of the Spirit as wind breathing through the purified soul.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 8: “The Garden of Delight”

Setting

The banquet transitions into a lush garden scene. Vines, roses, fountains projected on the scrim. Dancers move like flowing wind across the stage, with flowing fabrics. Lighting turns into a lush mix of greens and golds. The music blends hip-hop groove with soaring, fragrant operatic lines.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Garden = soul filled with virtues and presence of God.
  • Spirit wind = Holy Spirit breathing through contemplation.
  • Sealed fountain = inner purity, monastic chastity.
  • Union of Bridegroom and Bride = mystical marriage of Christ and the soul.
  • Banquet → Garden flow = Eucharist spilling into contemplative prayer.

[Intro – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic harmony over steady hip-hop beat]

Come into the garden, come and see,

Fruit of love, love’s mystery.

Breath of heaven, Spirit wind,

Awaken the fragrance deep within.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic sung-rap]

You’ve captured My heart, My treasure, My bride,

Every glance pulls Me inside.

Your lips drip honey, your tongue with grace,

Milk and wine flow from your face.

A garden enclosed, a fountain sealed,

A river of joy now revealed.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring opera duet]

Awake, O winds, blow through my soul,

North and south, let the Spirit roll.

Stir up the spices, fragrance rise,

Holy love fills up the skies.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, melodic rap-chant]

King of my life, I am Your field,

Every secret now revealed.

My garden’s Yours, my fruit, my vine,

Take what I am, let love define.

Breathe on me, O Spirit flame,

Every breath declares Your Name.

[Bridge – Chorus layering, echoing winds]

Ooooooh—wind of the Spirit, blow,

Ooooooh—river of heaven flow.

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor + Chorus, jubilant harmony]

Enter the garden, feast divine,

Love eternal, holy wine.

Bride and Bridegroom, joined as one,

Glory rising, kingdom come!

Song of Songs 5:2–6 provides the perfect transition:

“I was sound asleep, yet in my dreams I could hear the voice of my beloved. He was knocking at my innermost being… But when I arose to open the door for him, he was gone. My soul failed when he turned away and he disappeared.” (TPT)

Mystically, the Church Fathers and contemplatives saw this as God withdrawing His felt presence to deepen longing — the “dark night of the soul”. We’ll stage it as the Bride sensing distance for the first time, even in the midst of joy.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 9: “The Knock at Midnight”

Setting

The lush banquet-garden fades into night. Stage lighting dims to blue-violet, with a single door illuminated stage left. A faint knocking sound echoes. The beat is slower, more haunting, with low strings and heartbeat percussion.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, soft operatic line over heartbeat beat]

I lay at rest, my soul in dream,

When suddenly—His voice, His theme.

A knock resounds, He calls my name,

But when I rise, He’s not the same.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, gentle rap, echo effect]

Open the door, My love, My dove,

My flawless one, you’re all I dream of.

Night has fallen, dew on My hair,

I call your name, I’m waiting there.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, anxious rap-chant]

I delayed, I turned too slow,

By the time I rose—You chose to go.

I reached, I called, but silence stayed,

The Lover I seek had slipped away.

My soul is faint, my spirit cries,

Where are You now beneath the skies?

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic tension duet]

Knock, O Beloved, don’t turn away,

Stay through the night, O please, please stay.

Even in silence, even in pain,

I’ll search until I find You again.

[Bridge – Chorus (whisper-layering, eerie echo)]

Ooooooh—watch and pray,

Ooooooh—night and day.

Shadows rise, the silence deep,

But the flame of love will never sleep.

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor Voices, operatic lament]

Ooooooh—

The Bridegroom’s voice, it fades from sight,

But longing burns through darkest night.

Though shadows fall, though silence stays,

My heart will seek You all my days.

The Passion Translation gives us the language:

“I have gathered from your heart, my equal, my bride; I have gathered from my garden all my sacred spices—even my myrrh. I have drunk with you, my lover and my friend. Drink, and drink deeply, O lovers of my feast!” (Song 5:1 TPT)

This feels like the Act 1 Finale Feast: banquet, joy, union — a chorus-driven celebration that brings the whole company on stage.

🎭 Act 1, Scene 10: “Drink Deeply, O Lovers” (Curtain Finale)

Setting

The stage blossoms with full golden light. The garden and banquet table merge. Full ensemble enters — dancers, chorus, banners. The music swells into the grandest celebration yet. Hip-hop rhythms drive the energy, but opera harmonies soar above.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Feast of lovers = mystical Eucharist, heavenly banquet.
  • Union sealed = covenantal union of Christ and the soul.
  • Company chorus = the Church, mystic body joining in the feast.
  • Act 1 closes not in absence but in fullness — the joy of union before Act 2’s trials.

[Intro – Chorus, jubilant harmony with beat drop]

Ooooooh—

Come, O lovers, feast and sing,

Joy resounds for the Bride and King.

Drink the wine, let love increase,

Taste the banquet, eternal feast!

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rap cadence with authority]

I’ve gathered My spice, I’ve drunk My wine,

My garden is Yours, Beloved, divine.

Eat and drink, My friends, delight,

Love eternal burns tonight.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, melodic rap with passion]

I am Yours and You are mine,

Our hearts unite, our souls align.

The feast of love, the table spread,

By Your Spirit I am fed.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring duet]

Drink deeply, O lovers, sing,

Raise your voice to the Bridegroom King!

Every tear and trial cease,

Welcome to the feast of peace!

[Bridge – Chorus & Ensemble, hip-hop chant + opera overlay]

(Chant – rhythmic)

Dance, rejoice, the feast begun!

Bride and Bridegroom now are one!

(Overlay – operatic harmony)

Ooooooh—holy flame,

Forever sealed in the Bridegroom’s Name!

[Finale – Full Company, explosive Broadway-style ending]

All Voices:

Ooooooh—

Drink deeply, O lovers, let joy increase!

Bride and Bridegroom, union of peace!

Feast eternal, flame divine,

Curtain falls on love’s design!

This draws directly from Song of Songs 5:2–7 (TPT):

“I was asleep, but when I dreamed, my heart awakened. I heard the voice of my beloved as he knocked at my innermost being… But when I arose to open the door for him, he was gone. My soul went into darkness—my spirit failed me. I searched for him, but could not find him anywhere.”

Mystics like St. John of the Cross saw this as the “dark night of the soul” — God withdrawing His felt presence, not as punishment but as purification, to deepen love.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 11: “The Dark Night”

Setting

Stage plunges into deep indigo and shadow. A single lantern glows faintly on stage, then dims. Echoes of the wedding feast linger (a faint reprise), but they distort into minor chords. The beat is slow, heavy, with pulsing bass like a heart under strain.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • The “dark night” — loss of consolation in prayer, a test of love.
  • Searching the streets — the soul restless without Christ’s presence.
  • Hidden nearness — God unseen but not absent, training the heart in pure love.
  • Unresolved finale — Act 2 begins in tension, pointing toward eventual union.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, lamenting opera line over heartbeat beat]

I was at rest, my soul asleep,

When suddenly, Your voice did weep.

You knocked within, You called my name,

But when I rose—You never came.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, urgent rap-chant]

I searched the streets, I called, I cried,

Every corner, every side.

I opened wide, but You weren’t there,

Only silence filled the air.

My spirit fainted, shadows fell,

This night became a living hell.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, dramatic opera duet]

Where are You, Love? Why did You hide?

The flame is gone, my soul has died.

Yet still I seek, though all is night,

I’ll search until I see Your light.

[Verse 2 – Tenor Voice, distant echo-rap (offstage effect)]

I’m nearer than you realize,

Even hidden, I hear your cries.

Absence burns, it makes you yearn,

Through the night My love returns.

Don’t lose faith, don’t let go,

Through the shadow, deeper you’ll grow.

[Bridge – Chorus whisper-layering, haunting]

Ooooooh—

Dark night flame,

Ooooooh—

Love remains.

[Finale – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring but unresolved harmony]

Ooooooh—

Even in silence, my heart will sing,

Even in shadows, You are my King.

Though the night is long, though the veil is near,

My soul will wait till You appear.

The Passion Translation (Song 5:8–9) gives the lines:

“O brides-to-be, I beg you… if you find my beloved one, please tell him I endured all travails for him. I’ve been pierced through by love, and I will not be turned aside! What love is this? How could you continue to care so deeply for him?”

The mystics read this as the soul witnessing to the world of its desperate love for Christ, even when He feels absent.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 12: “Daughters of Jerusalem”

Setting

The Bride is still in shadow, center stage, kneeling or staggering. Surrounding her, the ensemble (the Daughters of Jerusalem) emerges with lanterns. Their voices blend hip-hop group chant and operatic chorus, questioning and echoing her cries.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Bride as witness = the mystic soul testifying even in absence.
  • Company chorus (daughters) = the world, or fellow seekers, curious about her devotion.
  • Pierced by love = echo of the cross and mystical wound of divine love (St. Teresa of Ávila’s “transverberation”).
  • Counterpoint layering = her testimony against their questions, symbolic of the tension between faith and doubt.

[Intro – Chorus (Daughters), layered harmonies with hip-hop rhythm]

Ooooooh—

Tell us, sister, what have you done?

Why do you wander, why do you run?

Who is this love you cannot deny,

That makes you weep, that makes you cry?

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice (Bride), urgent rap-chant]

I beg you, daughters, if you find my King,

Tell Him I’m pierced, love’s arrow stings.

I’ve borne the night, I’ve walked the pain,

Still I’ll search, I’ll call His Name.

My heart is His, I will not turn,

Through every shadow, my soul will yearn.

[Chorus – Company (Daughters), call-and-response]

Company chant (hip-hop):

What is your love, who is this man?

Why do you cling, why do you stand?

Operatic overlay (chorus harmony):

Ooooooh—tell us why,

Ooooooh—lift Him high.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice (Bride), melodic rap rising in passion]

My love is fire, my love is flame,

He sealed my soul, I bear His Name.

Through absence, longing, shadow, trial,

I’ll wait, I’ll walk another mile.

Pierced by love, I cannot flee,

For His desire is over me.

[Bridge – Company Chorus + Bride, overlapping counterpoint]

Company: Who is this King? Who is this love?

Bride: He’s the flame of heaven, the Dove above!

Company: Why give your life? Why bear the cost?

Bride: For one glance of Him, I count all lost!

[Finale – Full Ensemble, operatic explosion]

Ooooooh—

Tell Him I’m pierced, tell Him I stay,

Tell Him I’ll love Him night and day!

Daughters cry, the Bride declares,

This holy flame is all she bears!

The Passion Translation gives us stunning imagery:

“My lover is radiant and ruddy, distinguished among thousands! His head rests upon the highest mountain, his eyes like doves. His lips are like lilies, dripping with myrrh. His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely!”

Mystics understood this as the soul exalting Christ in ecstatic vision, seeing His beauty even in absence.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 13: “Altogether Lovely”

Setting

Spotlight isolates the Bride. The company (Daughters of Jerusalem) stand behind in shadow, listening in awe. The stage is stripped down — no garden, no banquet — only the Bride illuminated, testifying. A steady beat underscores her words, swelling with orchestral harmonies as her description intensifies.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Bride’s ecstatic vision = contemplative soul testifying of Christ’s beauty.
  • Physical metaphors = each detail is a symbol of divine perfection (head = divinity, eyes = compassion, arms = strength, etc.).
  • Altogether lovely = mystical shorthand for Christ as all-sufficient, all-beautiful.
  • Shift from absence to exaltation = even without His felt presence, the soul proclaims Him.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, soft operatic opening]

My lover, my King, radiant, bright,

Distinguished among ten thousand in sight.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, rap flow rising in energy]

His head is gold, His crown divine,

Upon His brow the heavens shine.

His eyes are doves, pools of grace,

Peace eternal lights His face.

His cheeks are gardens, fragrant, sweet,

Every glance makes my heart beat.

[Chorus – Soprano Voice, operatic declaration]

Altogether lovely, O my King,

Every part of You makes my soul sing.

Your name is honey, Your touch is flame,

Forever I’ll love, forever proclaim.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, fiery rap-chant]

His lips like lilies, dripping myrrh,

Words that heal, they still confer.

His arms like gold, His body fire,

Strength of heaven, my desire.

His legs are marble, pillars stand,

Foundation strong, unshaken land.

[Bridge – Soprano Voice, rapid rap into soaring aria]

Yes, He is radiant, yes, He is pure,

Every longing finds its cure.

Mouth like sweetness, voice like song,

In His presence, I belong.

[Chorus – Soprano Voice, soaring operatic climax]

Altogether lovely, O my King,

Every part of You makes my soul sing.

Your name is honey, Your touch is flame,

Forever I’ll love, forever proclaim.

[Finale – Full Company (echoing), Bride soaring above]

Company chant: Who is this man, the King above?

Bride (operatic): He is my Beloved, the One I love!

Company chant: Who is this flame, this mystery?

Bride (operatic): He is my Lord, my destiny!

All Voices:

Ooooooh—altogether lovely,

Altogether lovely,

Altogether lovely,

Forever my King!

If Scene 13 was the Bride’s show-stopping testimony (“He is altogether lovely”), then Scene 14 is the Daughters of Jerusalem responding in awe (Song of Songs 6:1–3):

“Where has your beloved gone, O fairest of women? Where is he hiding? We will help you find him. … My lover has gone down to his garden, to his spice beds, to feast with his friends. I am his lover, his friend, forever joined!”

Mystically, this scene reflects the soul’s witness drawing others into the pursuit of Christ. Her testimony doesn’t just strengthen her own love — it awakens hunger in the community.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 14: “Where Has He Gone?”

Setting

The Bride stands radiant after her solo in Scene 13. The Daughters of Jerusalem step forward from the shadows, surrounding her with questions. Lighting shifts into a dialogue effect: call-and-response spotlighting between the Bride and the Company. The beat is energetic, like a back-and-forth cypher, but layered with harmonic opera bursts.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Communal hunger — her testimony awakens the daughters to seek Him too.
  • Garden imagery — soul as the garden where Christ dwells.
  • Seal of belonging — “I am His and He is mine,” central to mystic theology.
  • Witness as evangelism — mystics saw their visions as not just personal, but for the Body.

[Intro – Company (Daughters), rhythmic chant with harmony]

Where has your Beloved gone, O fairest one?

Where does He hide when the night is done?

Where has your Beloved gone, O fairest friend?

Show us the way, we will search to the end.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice (Bride), confident rap]

My Beloved has gone to His garden of spice,

To feast with His friends, to rivers of life.

Among the lilies His presence flows,

Everywhere He walks, the garden grows.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor + Company, soaring harmony]

I am His, and He is mine,

In His garden, love divine.

I am His, and He is mine,

Forever sealed in holy sign.

[Verse 2 – Company (Daughters), questioning rap in unison]

Tell us, sister, where can He be?

What is this love that sets you free?

Why do you cling, why do you stay?

Why chase the flame that hides away?

[Verse 3 – Soprano Voice (Bride), melodic rap rising into opera]

He is the King, my soul’s delight,

The One who calls me through the night.

I am His garden, His flame, His friend,

Our covenant love will never end.

[Bridge – Overlapping counterpoint, Broadway style]

Company chant: Where has He gone? Where can He be?

Bride (opera): He is the flame that burns in me!

Company chant: Who is this Love, this mystery?

Bride (opera): He is my Lord, my destiny!

[Finale – Full Ensemble, joyful harmony]

Ooooooh—

I am His, and He is mine,

Bride and Beloved, love divine!

Ooooooh—

Sealed forever, holy flame,

He is my King, I bear His Name!

Here, the Beloved speaks of the Bride as radiant, majestic, and awe-inspiring:

“O my beloved, you are lovely. When I see you in your beauty, I see a radiant city, lovely as Jerusalem, awe-inspiring as an army waving banners of victory! … Overpowered by a glance, my heart is undone. For you captured me, even without one of your jewels.” (TPT)

Mystically, this is Christ affirming His Bride (the soul/Church) as glorious, victorious, and radiant in union. The Desert Fathers would read this as the fruit of purity and contemplation — the transformed soul shining with divine beauty.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 15: “Radiant as Jerusalem”

Setting

The chorus of Daughters (Scene 14) now shifts into awe. The Bride is lifted visually (perhaps placed on a dais or raised platform), bathed in golden-white light. The Tenor voice (Beloved) enters from stage right, singing over her, while the Company provides swelling harmonies.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Radiant Bride = theosis (the soul transfigured with divine glory).
  • Army with banners = triumph of the Church in mystical union.
  • Christ’s delight in the soul = pure contemplation, union of wills.
  • Communal awe = the daughters recognize the soul’s transformation.

[Intro – Tenor Voice, lyrical sung-rap with majesty]

O my beloved, you are radiant, bright,

Lovely as Jerusalem in the night.

Awesome as banners, armies stand,

You carry My flame, My heart, My hand.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic rap with intensity]

Turn your eyes, they capture Me whole,

One single glance unravels My soul.

No jewels needed, your beauty’s pure,

One look of love—I’m captured, sure.

Sixty queens, maidens untold,

But you shine brighter, heart of gold.

[Chorus – Tenor + Soprano Voices, soaring duet]

Radiant as Jerusalem,

Lovely as Zion’s crown,

Awesome as an army strong,

With love I lay My glory down.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice (Bride), melodic rap of humble awe]

Why should I shine with glory’s flame?

It’s You, Beloved, who gave me Your Name.

Your words adorn me, Your love makes me new,

Every light in me reflects back to You.

[Bridge – Company (Daughters), chant with operatic overlay]

Company chant (hip-hop):

Who is this Bride, this holy flame?

Who is this one, this radiant name?

Operatic overlay (harmony):

Ooooooh—chosen, fair,

Ooooooh—beyond compare.

[Finale – Full Ensemble, triumphant Broadway climax]

All voices:

Ooooooh—

Radiant, radiant, Bride of the King!

Glorious union, forever we sing!

Lovely as Zion, crowned in light,

Bride and Beloved, flame of night!

Perfect — Scene 16 can expand on the radiance theme, drawing from Song of Songs 7:1–10 (TPT) where the Beloved describes the Bride in rapturous detail.

This passage is some of the most vivid poetry:

“How beautiful on the mountains are the sandaled feet of this one bringing such good news! … Your inward life is now sprouting, bringing forth fruit. … The fragrance of your breath is like apples, your lips like scarlet thread. … How delicious is your fair beauty; it cannot be described. You are the living poem.”

Mystics interpreted this as Christ seeing the Bride as His masterpiece, radiant and fruitful — the transfigured soul, glowing with divine life.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 16: “Living Poem”

Setting

The stage is bathed in golden-white light with soft accents of green — imagery of fruit and vines appear projected. The Bride stands center stage, illuminated like a living icon. The Beloved (Tenor) circles her as he sings her radiance. The chorus echoes in awe, punctuating his words.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Bride as “living poem” = mystical interpretation of the soul as God’s masterpiece (Eph 2:10).
  • Fruitfulness = contemplative life blossoming into divine virtue.
  • Transfiguration = Desert Fathers described saints as glowing with divine light, like Moses’ shining face.
  • Union in Word and Poem = Christ (Word) and soul (poem) joined in beauty.

[Intro – Tenor Voice, lyrical sung-rap]

How beautiful your steps, O Bride,

Sandaled feet on the mountain side.

Bearer of good news, flame of grace,

Glory shines from your radiant face.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, rhythmic rap with warmth]

Your inward life is fruit made new,

Sprouting gardens, a sacred view.

Your waist is a fountain, your breath like wine,

Your lips are scarlet, your voice divine.

Every part a living flame,

Every glance declares My Name.

[Chorus – Tenor + Soprano Voices, soaring opera duet]

You are My living poem, sung,

The fairest song My heart has strung.

Every line is fire, every word is gold,

The mystery of love in you unfolds.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, melodic rap-chant of awe]

Why should I shine with radiant flame?

It’s You, Beloved, who wrote my name.

If I am poem, You are the Word,

The melody sung, the song I heard.

[Bridge – Company Chorus, chant with harmony overlay]

Company chant (hip-hop):

Living poem, radiant flame,

Written in love, sealed in Name.

Operatic overlay:

Ooooooh—shining bright,

Ooooooh—holy light.

[Finale – Full Ensemble, Broadway-style climax]

All voices:

Ooooooh—

She is the poem, He is the song,

Together their love is burning strong.

Bride and Beloved, radiant, free,

Living flame for eternity!

Here we move into Song of Songs 7:11–13 (TPT):

“Come away, my lover. Come with me to the faraway fields… Let us arise early and go to the vineyards to see if the new day has dawned. There I will give you my love. The fragrance of your love-surrounding me is sweeter than all the finest spice.”

Mystically, this is the soul inviting Christ into the fullness of union — ecstatic intimacy, joy in fruitfulness, and delight in divine communion. It’s an explosion of love consummated — the “crescendo of glory” before Act 2 pivots to its final trial arc.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 17: “Come Away With Me”

Setting

Stage becomes radiant — a fusion of golden dawn and blossoming vineyards. The Bride and Beloved move together in choreography, with the ensemble swirling around them like vines and fields. Music is both passionate hip-hop and soaring operatic ecstasy.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Bride’s invitation = contemplative ecstasy (soul fully surrendered in love).
  • Vineyard = fruitful prayer life and union in the Spirit.
  • Come away = mystical ascent to God, as in the Desert Fathers’ “flight into the desert” as symbolic union.
  • Union flame = theosis — soul shining with divine fire.
  • Ecstatic ensemble = heaven and earth rejoicing in the mystical wedding.

[Intro – Soprano Voice (Bride), operatic line with rising beat]

Come away with me, my Love, my King,

To the fields where the vineyards sing.

[Verse 1 – Soprano Voice, melodic rap-chant]

Let’s go out to the faraway land,

Rise at dawn, take my hand.

In the vineyards new life grows,

Fruit of love the Spirit shows.

There I’ll give my love to You,

Pure, eternal, holy, true.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, soaring duet]

Come away, come away with Me,

Fields of glory, rivers free.

Bride and Beloved, union flame,

Love eternal, sealed in Name.

[Verse 2 – Tenor Voice (Beloved), lyrical rap with tenderness]

Your fragrance sweeter than every spice,

Your love outshines the wine of life.

Every promise finds its place,

Every shadow turns to grace.

With you forever, hand in hand,

We’ll walk together through the land.

[Bridge – Company (Ensemble), chant with operatic overlay]

Come away, rise and see,

Bride and Beloved, destiny.

Ooooooh—union flame,

Ooooooh—holy Name.

[Finale – Full Ensemble, ecstatic Broadway climax]

Ooooooh—

Bride and Beloved, glory rise,

Morning dawns, no more disguise.

Come away, love divine,

Bride and King forever shine!

“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is stronger than death, passion fierce as the grave. The fire of love is a blazing flame, a mighty flame of the LORD.” (Song 8:6–7, TPT)

This is the summit of the mystics — divine love as eternal, unconquerable, stronger than death itself. St. John of the Cross called this the “living flame of love,” and the Desert Fathers saw this as the soul entering the fire of divine union.

We’ll stage it as a soul-searing duet between Bride (soprano) and Beloved (tenor), joined by the ensemble in three-part operatic harmonies. This is the emotional high point of Act 2 before the final resolution.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 18: “Love Stronger Than Death”

Setting

The stage burns with golden-red light, almost like fire surrounding the Bride and Beloved. The ensemble encircles them in stillness, adding harmonies. The music is slow, weighty, intensely melodic — swelling into operatic grandeur.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • Seal on heart/arm = covenant mark of divine love (mystics: the soul branded by Christ’s fire).
  • Love stronger than death = foreshadowing resurrection victory, Christ’s love on the cross.
  • Unquenchable fire = Holy Spirit as eternal flame in the soul.
  • Three-part harmony = symbol of Trinitarian fullness in divine love.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, soaring operatic line]

Place me as a seal upon Your heart,

Place me as a seal upon Your arm.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, lyrical]

For love is stronger, stronger than death,

Its fire consumes with holy breath.

Many waters cannot drown,

Flame eternal, glory crowned.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, powerful duet with ensemble harmony]

Love is stronger than the grave,

Love eternal, mighty to save.

Blazing flame, holy breath,

Love is stronger, stronger than death.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, tender but fierce]

Jealous fire, unyielding flame,

Nothing on earth can quench Your Name.

Every shadow, fear, and lie,

Burns away as You draw nigh.

[Bridge – Ensemble (3-part harmony, layering)]

Ooooooh—flame divine,

Ooooooh—seal and sign.

Love eternal, holy breath,

Love is stronger, stronger than death.

[Finale – Full Ensemble + Leads, operatic explosion]

All voices:

Ooooooh—

Love eternal, love divine,

Seal forever, holy sign.

Bride and Beloved, hearts enmesh,

Love is stronger, stronger than death!

Perfect. After the blazing fire of Scene 18 (“Love is Stronger than Death”), Scene 19 should begin to pivot down from the intensity and guide us toward peace, resolution, and rest.

The natural text here is Song of Songs 8:10–14 (TPT):

“Now I have grown and become a bride, and my love for him has made me a tower of passion and contentment for my beloved. … Come away, my lover. Come with me to the faraway fields. … Hurry, my beloved, and come quickly like a graceful gazelle or a young stag.”

Mystically, this is the soul at rest: matured, secure in union, no longer frantic or fearful. The Desert Fathers would call this hesychia — stillness of the soul in God.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 19: “The Maturity of Love”

Setting

The fiery golden-red light of Scene 18 softens into a serene dawn. The stage glows with gentle blues and golds, evoking morning peace. The Bride and Beloved are close together, seated or standing hand-in-hand. Ensemble surrounds them quietly, adding gentle harmonies.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, clear and gentle]

Now I have grown, my love is sure,

A tower of peace, forever secure.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, tender melodic line]

You are My garden, steady and true,

No shadow remains, I delight in you.

Your love has ripened, your soul has stayed,

In fire and silence, gold is made.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, layered harmonies]

Matured in love, we rise as one,

The night is gone, the dawn has come.

No fear remains, no shadow near,

Perfect love has cast out fear.

[Verse 2 – Soprano Voice, contemplative and pure]

I am His, and He is mine,

Love eternal, holy sign.

Through every trial, through every test,

I’ve found in Him my soul’s true rest.

[Bridge – Ensemble, soft chant layered with harmonies]

Ooooooh—love complete,

Ooooooh—perfect peace.

[Finale – Full Ensemble + Leads, soaring but gentle resolution]

All voices:

Ooooooh—

Love has ripened, love has stayed,

Through fire refined, forever made.

Bride and Beloved, tower and dove,

Eternal rest, unbroken love.

Since Scene 19 (“The Maturity of Love”) brought us into peaceful union and rest, Scene 20 should bring everything full circle — a joyful but serene finale, tying back to the longing of Scene 1 (“Let him kiss me”) and the triumph of Scene 10 (“Drink deeply, O lovers”).

The last verses of Song of Songs (8:13–14, TPT) give us the perfect closing:

“My beloved one, let me hear your voice once more. Come away, my beloved, and be like a gazelle upon the mountains of spices.”

Mystically, this is the soul’s eternal invitation to Christ — a cry for the eternal union that continues beyond time.

🎭 Act 2, Scene 20: “Come Away, My Beloved” (Finale Curtain)

Setting

The stage fills with soft golden dawn light, vineyards blooming all around. The Bride and Beloved stand together at center stage, hand in hand. The full company forms a circle around them. Music swells with warmth — not the fire of Scene 18, but the peace and glory of eternal love.

Mystical Christian Themes (woven in)

  • “Come away” = eternal summons to union with Christ, foreshadowing resurrection.
  • Mountains of spices = heavenly imagery, union beyond time.
  • Love stronger than death reprised = eternal triumph through Christ.
  • Final hush = the soul in peace, resting forever in divine love.

[Intro – Soprano Voice, gentle clear tone]

Let me hear Your voice once more,

Calling me to heaven’s shore.

[Verse 1 – Tenor Voice, lyrical and tender]

Come away, My beloved, rise,

Run with Me through fields and skies.

Mountains fragrant, vineyards new,

Every breath is filled with You.

[Chorus – Soprano + Tenor Voices, radiant duet]

Love eternal, holy flame,

Yesterday, today, the same.

Bride and Bridegroom, face to face,

Forever sealed in love’s embrace.

[Verse 2 – Company Ensemble, chant with harmonies]

Ooooooh—

Drink the wine, rejoice, be free,

Love has won, eternally.

Ooooooh—

Every trial now undone,

Bride and King forever one.

[Bridge – Soprano (Bride), soaring melody]

Stronger than death, the fire remains,

Sealed forever, love sustains.

[Bridge – Tenor (Beloved), soaring melody]

Deeper than time, beyond the grave,

My heart is yours, My love will save.

[Finale – Full Ensemble + Leads, triumphant but serene]

All voices:

Ooooooh—

Come away, O love divine,

Bride and Bridegroom intertwine.

Every song, every breath,

Love is stronger, stronger than death.

(Reprise, softly fading – Soprano + Tenor in unison)

Come away, My Beloved one…

Come away…
