By His Stripes: A Painting You Build One Card at a Time

There’s a verse that’s easy to say and hard to sit with: “with his stripes we are healed.” Most of us have heard it enough times that it stops landing. So instead of one painting of it, I made twelve — and the only way to see the whole thing is to put all twelve down side by side.

By His Stripes is a set of twelve prophetic encouragement postcards. Each one works on its own — a headline, a short devotional word, a scripture, signed like a letter. But each card is also a literal piece of a single painting: Christ, crowned with thorns, the wounds across His chest glowing like the whole verse is happening in front of you. Arrange all twelve cards in a 3-across, 4-down grid — the same order they’re numbered — and the individual pieces resolve into one image.

Each card still has to stand alone

That was the harder rule to keep. It would have been easy to just slice a painting into twelve rectangles and call it a set. But a card that only makes sense next to eleven others isn’t a card you can actually give to someone. So every one of these carries its own complete thought — its own scripture, its own word for whoever’s holding it that day — whether or not the other eleven ever show up.

Card three is where the set gets its name:

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

The card’s whole devotional line is four words: “Jesus is your Passover. His blood is on your doorpost.” Some things don’t need paragraphs.

Why build it as a puzzle at all

Because healing doesn’t usually arrive all at once, and neither does understanding what it cost. Twelve small pieces — carried, given away, mailed one at a time, or laid out together on a table — felt truer to how most of us actually receive something like this than one large print would have. You can hold a single wound. You can also step back and see the whole picture. The set lets you do both.
